Here’s something most Charlotte business owners haven’t thought about yet: when someone asks ChatGPT “Who’s the best plumber in Charlotte?” or “Find me a good dentist near Ballantyne” — does your business show up?
For most local businesses, the answer is no. And that’s a problem that’s getting bigger every month.
The Shift to AI Search
People aren’t just Googling anymore. They’re asking ChatGPT. They’re using Perplexity. They’re getting answers from Google’s AI Overviews — those AI-generated summaries at the top of search results.
Here’s the thing: AI doesn’t search the web the same way Google does. AI models pull from their training data, cited sources, and real-time web access. If your business isn’t structured in a way that AI systems can understand and trust, you’re invisible.
This isn’t a future problem. It’s happening right now.
Why Most Charlotte Businesses Are Invisible to AI
We’ve audited dozens of local businesses in Charlotte, and the same issues come up repeatedly:
1. No Entity Validation
AI systems need to verify that your business is real. That means:
- A Google Business Profile (filled out completely, not half-done)
- Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across the web
- Presence on directories like Yelp, BBB, and industry-specific sites
- A LinkedIn company page
If AI can’t find your business in multiple trusted places, it won’t recommend you.
2. Thin or Generic Content
AI prefers to cite content that demonstrates expertise. A homepage that says “We’re the best plumber in Charlotte” doesn’t cut it. You need:
- Detailed service pages that explain what you do and how
- Blog content that answers real questions your customers ask
- Case studies or examples of your work
- Author information (who’s writing this? Are they credible?)
3. No Structured Data
Structured data (JSON-LD schema markup) is how you tell search engines and AI systems exactly what your business is, where you’re located, what services you offer, and how to contact you. Most local business websites have zero structured data.
4. AI Crawlers Are Blocked
Some websites accidentally block AI crawlers in their robots.txt file. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot can’t access your site, they can’t recommend you.
What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — it’s the practice of optimizing your online presence specifically for AI-powered search engines. Think of it as SEO’s evolution.
Traditional SEO optimizes for Google’s algorithm. GEO optimizes for AI systems that need to understand, verify, and cite your business.
The core principles:
- Be findable — your business exists in enough trusted places that AI can verify you
- Be understandable — structured data and clear content help AI parse what you do
- Be citable — your content is specific and authoritative enough that AI wants to reference it
- Be accessible — AI crawlers can actually reach your site
How to Check Your AI Visibility
Here’s a quick test you can do right now:
- Open ChatGPT and ask: “Who are the best [your service] companies in Charlotte, NC?”
- Open Perplexity and ask the same question
- Search Google for your main keyword and see if an AI Overview appears — are you in it?
If you’re not showing up in any of these, you have work to do.
5 Things You Can Do This Week
1. Complete Your Google Business Profile
Fill out every single field. Add photos. Post updates. Respond to reviews. This is the single most important thing for local AI visibility.
2. Add Schema Markup to Your Website
At minimum, add LocalBusiness schema with your name, address, phone, services, and hours. This is code your web developer can add in an afternoon.
3. Check Your robots.txt
Make sure you’re not blocking AI crawlers. Your robots.txt should allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot.
4. Create a llms.txt File
This is a new standard — a simple text file at your website root that tells AI systems about your business in plain language. Think of it as a cover letter for AI.
5. Write Content That Answers Real Questions
Don’t write for keywords. Write to answer the questions your customers actually ask. “How much does a water heater replacement cost in Charlotte?” is the kind of content AI loves to cite.
The Window Is Closing
Right now, most of your competitors aren’t thinking about AI search. That means there’s an opportunity to get ahead. But as awareness grows, the competition will catch up.
The businesses that set up their AI visibility now will have a compounding advantage — just like the businesses that invested in SEO early dominated search results for years.
